Singapore Airlines is making several big changes to its fare structure in the name of offering travellers greater flexibility to cater to their unique travel needs. Truth be told, these changes and their accompanying conditions and rules are very confusing at first glance. For travellers, these changes that cover advance seat selection, baggage allowance, KrisFlyer frequent flyer mileage accrual rates (etc.) will go into full force from January 20, 2018.
Besides changes to cancellation and airfare refund policies, up to 3 new fare categories will be introduced for all Singapore Airlines and SilkAir tickets sold worldwide and travellers will have several seat types to choose from, of which fees may apply depending on the fare type you are flying on and your KrisFlyer membership tier. All of these new fare conditions will apply to flights operated by Singapore Airlines and SilkAir.
Before you pull your hair out in frustration and confusion, read on ahead as we GET.com highlight the important things you ought to know if you happen to be someone who prefers to fly Singapore Airlines and/or SilkAir.
4 Important Things To Know About Singapore Airlines' New Fare Rules
1. Economy Travellers Have The Most Changes To Grapple With
There will be 3 new fare types for Economy Class bookings, named 'Lite', 'Standard' and 'Flexi'. Depending on which fare type you choose to go with, the fare conditions that you have to comply with vary. And from January 20, 2018, some travellers may have to deal with fare increases.
Travellers on flights operated by Singapore Airlines and SilkAir who opt for Economy Lite will have to pay a minimum of US$5 (approximately S$6.70) per flight segment if they prefer to choose their seats in advance. Nevertheless, advance seat selection for this particular fare type will still be available for free to families with kids below the age of 12 in the same booking.
If you are not willing to shell out some extra cash to pick your seat ahead of time, feel free to choose from the available seats when online check-in opens, usually up to 48 hours before your scheduled flight departure time.
What about travellers who opt for Economy Standard and Economy Flexi fare types? Advance seat selection will be available at no extra charge, although those flying Economy Standard will have to pay a fee if they choose Forward Zone seats (i.e. seats that are near the doors). Travellers flying on an Economy Flexi fare type can pick Standard Seats and Forward Zone seats in advance for free.
2. Free Advance Seat Selection Remains For Some Passengers
To reiterate, not every passenger will have to contend with paying for advance seat selection. Here's a quick rundown on who will be eligible for complimentary advance seat selection, broken down according to fare types and classes.
Economy Lite: Advance seat selection is free for families with children (12-years-old and under) in the same booking.
Economy Standard: Advance seat selection is free if you opt for Standard Seats. Forward Zone seats and Extra Legroom seats will come with charges.
Economy Flexi: Advance seat selection is free if you opt for Standard Seats or Forward Zone seats. As usual, Extra Legroom seats will come with charges.
Premium Economy Standard and Premium Economy Flexi: Advance seat selection will remain free-of-charge for all Premium Economy Class bookings, with the exception of Extra Legroom seats. PPS Club members will get to enjoy free Extra Legroom seat selection, though.
