Things We Like About UOB PRVI Miles American Express Card

You earn 2.4 miles for each $1 you spend overseas. You earn UNI$6 for every $5 that you spend, which when translated into miles works out to 2.4 miles per $1 or purchases. You earn this higher rate of miles when you are outside of Singapore and make purchases in a foreign currency (not Singapore dollars). Shopping online from a store outside of Singapore, for example, will not earn the higher points.

You earn 1.4 miles for each $1 you spend locally. Now this is where UOB PRVI Miles American Express Card really becomes interesting. You earn 1.4 miles for every $1 that you spend in Singapore (UNI$3.5 for every $5), which is one of the highest rates of miles for local spending you can get these days. That makes this a choice card if you spend most of your time in Singapore and want to be rewarded with miles towards free flights, because you will earn a high rate of miles on all your local spending.

You can earn up to 6 miles per $1 on airline bookings. That's a nice rate of miles, but you only earn these miles on select travel offers from UOB Travel. So while you may occasionally find great deals with UOB Travel and enjoy these high points on your bookings, this isn't the main reason you would want to get this card. That is, of course, unless you already book al your travel with UOB, in which case this is one of the most rewarding cards you can get.

You get 20,000 bonus miles per year with $50,000 spending. Every year in which you spend $50,000 using this card, you earn a bonus of 20,000 miles. You get this bonus as UNI$10,000. Considering this card is for people with an income of $80,000 or more per year, spending $50,000 annually isn't unrealistic as an average UOB PRVI Miles American Express Card cardholder, if you charge most of your spending to this card.

There's no limit to how many miles you can earn. Many other cards place a cap on the number of miles you can earn every month or year. Not this one. The more you spend, the more you earn, fair and square.

The annual fee is waived for the first year. The $256.80 annual fee, waived for the first year is fairly high, but the fee will be waived every year in which you spend $50,000 or more. The first 2 supplementary cards are complimentary but the annual fee for the third supplementary card onwards will be $128.40 per card.

The rewards you earn are flexible. You earn rewards with this card as UNI$. These can then be converted into air miles at the conversion rate of UNI$1 = 2 miles and you can redeem them by web, mobile app, phone and also instantly in selected stores, shopping malls and cafes across Singapore. If you prefer not to redeem your rewards for travel, you can also redeem your UNI$ for special discounts and deals spanning a range of categories including dining, shopping and travel.

15% discount on the number of miles required when you redeem your miles for travel online. If you can redeem online, we suggest you do, as that will help you get this great

You get a $45 rebate on an airport limousine service. For each 1-way limousine transfer to Changi Airport that you book with Maxicab Limousine Services in a quarter, you will get a $45 rebate, but only if you charge at least $1000 overseas within the same 3-month quarter (January-March, April-June, etc.). So as long as you know you will spend $1000 during your trip outside of Singapore, you can pretty confidently begin your trip in a limousine, knowing that you'll get a pretty good rebate. You can get up to $90 limousine rebates per quarter.

You get complimentary travel insurance. Using this card to pay for your flights and other travel bookings in full lets you enjoy free travel insurance. This can help you save because you won't have to buy additional travel insurance unless you need coverage which you don't already get from this card. Here's a summary of the coverage you get:

  • Travel Personal Accident Insurance. Up to $1 million when you book your travel and pay with this card.
  • Connecting Flight delays of 4 hours or more. Up to $200 of your extra expenses like food or drinks which you charge to this card, if your flight or other common carrier trip is delayed.
  • Delayed luggage (6 hours or more). If your luggage doesn't arrive on time, you can claim up to $200 in compensation.
  • Loss of luggage. You can get up to $400 if your luggage is lost by an airline or other common carrier.

You get a travel concierge service and emergency assistance. The complimentary UOB Travel Butler service can help with reservations, redeeming your miles for travel, or even arranging emergency medical assistance while you're travelling. This a very useful benefit that can save you a lot of stress by having somebody else take care of the things that take up your time.

Overseas purchase protection. When you use this card to pay for your shopping outside of Singapore, the things you buy will be covered up to $1,000 per item up to a total of $5,000 per purchase if they are lost, damaged or stolen. You will have to pay a $100 excess for each item you claim, so this coverage is most helpful when you buy expensive things.

American Express Card privileges. Bonuses that come with this American Express card include discounts and offers with the American Express Live The World programme (deals on shopping, dining, hotels and online shopping in China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan).

Small Luxury Hotels of the World. If you want to feel loved, the exclusive chance to join The Club of Small Luxury Hotels of the World as a Loved member might be just what you need. Loved members receive a free room upgrade (subject to availability), daily free continental breakfast for 2 and late check-out (subject to availability) on every stay. You can also receive 3 nights for the price of 2 at any of the participating Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

Our Least Favourite Things About UOB PRVI Miles American Express Card

$25 conversion fee. When you exchange your UNI$ for actual air miles, you will be charged a $25 conversion fee. I suggest you only exchange your points for miles once you have accumulated enough to purchase a ticket.

Minimum annual income. To be eligible to apply for this card you must be at least 21 years of age and earn a minimum annual income of $80,000.

UNI$ expire. All UNI$ expire after 2 years, so if you don't spend enough to earn a flight in less than 2 years then Citi PremierMiles Visa Card may work better for you since it gives you miles that don't expire.

UOB PRVI Miles American Express Card has one of the highest miles earning rates for all spending, both local and overseas, of any credit card in Singapore right now, and also gives you solid travel insurance and travel benefits. If you earn $50,000 or more per year and spend at least $50,000 using a credit card, this is one of the best miles cards you can get.

In our opinion, the biggest benefits that come with UOB PRVI Miles American Express Card are the insurance coverage and concierge service that it provides. Yes, it does have some of the highest miles rates available right now, but as a miles card it will work best if you are prepared to spend an average of $2,000 per month using this card, with at least $500 spent outside of Singapore. That amount of spending will get you a long-distance flight before your UNI$ expire after 2 years. If you are a big spender and use UOB PRVI Miles American Express Card to make at least $50,000 of purchases every year, you can enjoy an additional 10,000 bonus miles yearly and avoid paying the annual fee. All things considered, if you earn and spend big, this is the miles card that will reward you most.
